Interviewing Tips
From Legal Network News
Recently, a client called me prior to interviewing for a secretarial position. She asked if I had any questions she could ask which might allow her to determine what kind of attitude the candidate might bring to the office.

I have no easy answer for that question. To get to know a candidate in a few minutes is very difficult. We can test for typing speed and computer skills, but to test for a good attitude and a "sweet spirit" is next to impossible.

Instead of focusing on asking the right question, concentrate on asking the question right. That means phrasing questions so they can't be answered with a simple yes or no...so you can elicit more information from your candidate. Example: Instead of asking the candidate, "Can you work under stress or in a stress-filled environment?" you might ask, "In a stressful situation, how would you help to relieve the stress and keep focused on the job at hand?" As candidates begin to answer this type of question, they will open up and begin to show you how they might react in a given situation.

There will always be some risk involved when choosing a candidate for an available position. But by asking questions which allow the candidates to share their thoughts and ideas and what they might do in a situation, you will be better able to understand who they are.

Remember, the key to any good interview is LISTEN to your candidate!
